Free Emergency Preparedness Meeting

  • Davidian Hall

Everyone is invited to a free emergency preparedness program on August 24, 2014, in Davidian Hall at Pacific Union College. The sessions, offered twice at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., will be presented by a representative from the American Red Cross and sponsored by the Angwin Community Council.

“The purpose of the meeting is to help the members of the Angwin community and anyone who attends, take steps to better prepare in case of a disaster including how to create a disaster kit, how to make a family and personal plan for a disaster and how to be informed when a disaster strikes,” says Jennifer Schooley, executive assistant and volunteer coordinator for the Red Cross.

Emergency preparedness is especially important given California’s drought and Angwin’s vulnerability to fire, as evidenced by the recent fire in Pope Valley. But beyond that, Angwin is vulnerable to several different kinds of hazards, including earthquakes, flooding, and extended power-outages.

During an emergency situation, Schooley says civilians should be prepared to survive for a minimum of 72 hours without immediate assistance from first responders. However, in more rural regions, the recommendation has been increased to as much as 30 days.

“The better prepared a community and its members, the more resilient the community and its members are after a disaster,” says Schooley.

The program will be in lecture hall 205 of Davidian Hall. For more information, please call the Angwin Community Council at (707) 965-2867.

Join us for a fun-filled day complete with more than 70 flea market tables, local food vendors, vintage cars, kids activities, and a showcase from the Angwin Fire Department. The Flea Market and Fire Department Showcase will be held in parking lot adjacent and behind the College Market. The Car Show will be in the hayfield, north of the tennis courts.

All proceeds from this year's event will benefit the Angwin Fire Station Renovation Project. The Angwin Community Council is hoping to raise $50,000 to go toward securing and repairing the garage wall, with additional funds going toward kitchen improvements. Currently, the station is in need of renovations, and we want to help.

The Angwin Volunteer Fire Department gives our community more than 1,500 annually in training, educational programming at local schools, and in emergency responses. This special group of volunteers makes Angwin a better and safer place to live.

Let's invest in this amazing team and our community by supporting our annual fundraiser!

Napa Valley Off-Road Triathlon

Pacific Union College presents the first Napa Valley Off-Road Triathlon, an event that will benefit the non-profit organization Clinica Verde. Clinica Verde promotes sustainable health care for the underserved populations of rural Nicaragua.

The Triathlon features events for all ages, including a kid’s triathlon, a 5k run/walk, triathlon relay, beginner triathlon, and the individual triathlon. Uniquely, the triathlon includes a mountain bike course instead of a road bike course, much like the popular Xterra series of races.

Pre-registration for the race closes on Friday, April 26, and the race-day registration opens at 5:30 AM. The triathlon, relays, and 5k run/walk will begin at 8 AM with the kid’s triathlon beginning at 10 AM.

All participants will receive official finish times, finisher medals, and race t-shirts. Three-deep medals will also be given in age divisions.

Sponsored by St. Helena Hospital Napa Valley and local businesses including the Calistoga Bike Shop, Sportago, and the Napa Running Company, the race is directed by Fabio Maia, PUC’s service and missions coordinator.
